Apart from that, its only other interest is its cast of seasoned veterans: in addition to Rafferty, we also get Andrew Prine, Paul Lukather, Bruce Davison and (in a small role) a pre-Freddy Robert Englund. Director Ivan Nagy does well with her experiences of other people's memories, which are depicted as chaotic when funneled through Suzy's perceptions. A prosecutor (Tori Spelling) places herself in danger when she tries to use her newfound telepathy to investigate a crime. In the film's one memorable comic scene, she has one accidental encounter with the thoughts of the married man she's sleeping with, as she learns that he really has no intention of leaving his wife.Īpart from this scene, most of the film is routine movie-of-the-week mush. This proves to be somewhat helpful as she starts picking up the thoughts of the perps she's trying to convict. She doesn't do what many people with such a gift would do- running around reading as many minds as possible- but tries to restrict the power of her gift to criminal matters.
There's a modicum of tension in Carrington's scenario, and Raffin acquits herself well until her character is turned into a punching bag however, when the drama and the majority of characters are this ridiculously drawn, it's nearly impossible to fall for such juvenile shenanigans.MIND OVER MURDER is a decent enough TV-movie about an assistant district attorney, name of "Suzy" (Deborah Raffin), who suddenly gains the power to hear other people's thoughts.
Two of the supporting performances-by Bruce Davison as Raffin's whining boyfriend and Andrew Pine as the preening madman in tight jeans-are so ineffective as to be almost embarrassing, which is really the fault of writer Robert Carrington for his atrocious teleplay and director Ivan Nagy for his inept staging. Clearly inspired by the theatrical "Eyes of Laura Mars" from 1978, plot concerns an actress in Los Angeles who begins having premonitions of a menacing bald man and a plane crash naturally, the two are connected, and soon our heroine finds herself kidnapped by the psychopath (who hangs out in an abandoned building well-equipped with burning light bulbs). Deborah Raffin's lead performance in this tepid TV-made thriller is the only reason to watch.
